The Reeths-Puffer volleyball team posted a 1-2 record and finished in sixth place at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association volleyball tournament on Saturday.

The Rockets started the day by losing a tough match to Fruitport 22-25, 23-25, beat Oakridge 25-20, 25-21, then fell to Western Michigan Christian 25-21, 25-23.

Madisyn Dykema had 19 kills and served four aces on the day.

Billie Tryska, just back from an injury, added 17 kills, Sophia Hekkema had 15 and Natalie Kunnen totaled eight. Emme Buzzell served six aces.

Defensively, Megan Barmes had 15 digs. Hekkema had 14 and Lauren Nelson had 12. Tryska and Dykema had seven and five blocks, respectively.

“To quote one of my players, it went frustratingly well,” said Reeths-Puffer coach Justin Birr. “We were right there in our loss to Fruitport, and we were also very close with WMC. Overall we played very good volleyball but ended up on the losing end of two matches.

“It was those small moments where we lost – letting balls hit the floor between two players, not covering our hitters aggressively enough, serving the ball way out of bounds. These little moments matter when the game is so close, and we will work to fix those things.”

The Rockets, now 14-17-2, will hit the road on Tuesday to play Zeeland East in the semifinals of the O-K Green conference tournament. Zeeland East is undefeated in league play.
