MUSKEGON TWP. – The Reeths-Puffer football team hoped to send its seniors off with one final victory at Rocket Stadium on Friday night, but a powerful Byron Center squad had other plans.

The Bulldogs scored 41 unanswered points before the Rockets finally found the end zone, and handed R-P a 55-14 loss in an O-K Green conference matchup.

The loss dropped Reeths-Puffer to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play, putting another dent in the Rockets' postseason hopes.

Byron Center, ranked No. 8 in the Division 2 state playoff point standings entering the game, improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the night carried special meaning for the Rockets' seniors, who were recognized before their final home game.

For R-P head coach Cody Kater, the senior class holds a special place in his coaching career.

"This group, they were eighth graders when I first got here, so this is kind of my first group seeing it through from start to finish," Kater said. "I'm very thankful for them and the work and the time that they put in."

The Rockets struggled to find offensive consistency early, with penalties and negative plays stalling their first three possessions.

Byron Center took advantage, scoring on a 17-yard touchdown run by Cam Payne with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

Payne struck again on the Bulldogs' next possession, breaking loose for a 34-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-0 with 1:56 left in the quarter.

The Bulldogs continued their offensive dominance early in the second quarter, when quarterback Brady Hartson scored on a 12-yard keeper with 10:25 remaining before halftime, making the score 21-0.

Reeths-Puffer finally found some momentum on its next possession.

Senior running back Dre Sanders broke loose for a 55-yard run, moving the Rockets deep into Bulldog territory. R-P continued marching downfield, converting a fourth-and-one on a 12-yard completion from senior quarterback Braylon Swain to junior Hunter Adams.

But after reaching the Byron Center 3-yard line, the Rockets came away empty-handed when Swain's fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone with just over five minutes remaining in the half.

The missed opportunity proved costly.

Byron Center responded with a 97-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by a 67-yard run from Keaton Van Kampen. Payne capped the possession with a 32-yard touchdown run with 3:35 remaining in the second quarter, giving the Bulldogs a commanding 28-0 halftime lead.

The second half started poorly for Reeths-Puffer, which attempted an onside kick that Byron Center recovered.

Three plays later, Payne scored on a 15-yard run with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Rockets blocked the extra point, leaving the score at 34-0.

Byron Center added another touchdown on a four-yard jet sweep by Connor Neal with 6:25 remaining in the third, extending its lead to 41-0.

But the Rockets refused to go quietly.

Swain began finding success through the air, connecting with junior receiver Jamichael Williams for consecutive completions before hitting senior Connor McManus for a 28-yard gain down the middle of the field.

Swain capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown scramble with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter, finally putting Reeths-Puffer on the scoreboard.

The Rockets carried that momentum into the fourth quarter.

After another productive drive, Sanders broke loose for a 41-yard touchdown run with 10:07 remaining, cutting the deficit to 41-14.

The Bulldogs scored on a one-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Thrash with 6:07 remaining before adding a 20-yard scoring run by Caden Meyering with 5:41 left, extending their lead to 55-14.

The Rockets' offensive struggles were compounded by penalties and turnovers throughout the night, including two interceptions and multiple possessions that ended without points despite reaching Bulldog territory.

Kater credited Byron Center for its complete performance, but acknowledged his teams’ missed opportunities to keep the game competitive.

"I liked our guys' fight," Kater said. "We shot ourselves in the foot in a couple drives early on that would have kept us in the game."

For Swain, the final home game was about more than the scoreboard.

"It's just a little emotional," the senior quarterback said. "Obviously, you want to go out with a win. I just hope that I was able to be a good role model for people and teach people lessons that will carry them on and off the field."

Swain spoke of the bond his classmates developed throughout their years in the program.

"We've always been super close," Swain said. "Everybody just bought in right from the start."

The Rockets will close out their regular season next Friday, Oct. 23, when they travel to Whitehall for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

"We can still write our own legacy this last week," Kater said. "We've got an opportunity still, one more last opportunity to put the helmet on and look through that face mask."
