Reeths-Puffer’s Sophia McCollum has already demonstrated that she is one of the best high school golfers in the state.
That's why nobody was surprised when she finished at the top of the standings at Monday’s prestigious Captain Sally Tournament at the American Dunes Golf Course in Grand Haven.
McCollum, the defending Division 2 individual state champion, shot a 79 and tied with Northville’s Stella Merko and Cam Baker for the championship in the invitation-only tournament.
It was McCollum’s second tournament championship in less than a week. She also took first place at last Tuesday's Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Tournament.

Monday’s event in Grand Haven included many of the best girls golfers in the state, and McCollum rose to the occasion, just like she did in last year’s Division 2 state championship tournament.
“That was a big victory for Sophia,” said R-P head coach Matt Pallett. “There were a number of girls who have or will be All-State in the field today.”
McCollum and fellow senior Olivia Amber were the two Rockets invited to compete in the elite tournament, which is played in honor of Michigan’s military veterans.
Ambler also had a very good outing, shooting a 91 and finishing 19th in the final standings.

“I’m very proud of both Olivia and Sophia,” Pallett said. “They were great representatives of Reeths-Puffer and both played great while being wonderful young ladies.”
As part of the theme of the day, McCollum and Ambler dedicated their efforts on the course to Geneva (Moore) Williams, a 1972 Reeths-Puffer graduate who served in the United States Marines before returning to the community and working for R-P in different roles over the years.
Williams currently works in the reception office at the high school.
“She is part of a four-generation military family,” Pallett said. “We are thankful for Mrs. Williams and all of our veterans in our community and throughout the USA.
“Ultimately, this was more than just about golf today. It was a great way to honor our veterans. Hats off to Ian Ziska and his staff from American Dunes for a well run tournament and great experience for all the players.”
