On one hand, the Reeths-Puffer girls golf team had a pretty good outing on Wednesday, shooting a team score of 358, which was its second-best 18-hole score of the season.
But the Rockets actually took a small step back at the O-K Green Mid-Season Tournament at The Pines Golf Course in Byron Center.
The finished in third place, after finishing second in the first two conference events of the season. R-P came in behind first-place Byron Center, which won with a score of 325, and Caledonia (338).
Finishing behind the Rockets were Jenison (360) and Mona Shores (401).
“Overall the team didn’t feel great about our performance today,” said R-P head coach Matt Pallet. “I like that about our team. We just shot our second lowest 18-hole round of the season and they were not happy. It shows that the girls feel we can keep getting better.”

Also taking a small step back was R-P standout Sophia McCollum, who took first place individually in the first two conference events, but finished second on Thursday.
She shot a 76, one stroke behind Byron Center’s Izzy Tawoda. McCollum won an All-Tournament medal for her finish.
Olivia Ambler has R-P’s second-best score of 92 while Ella Voorhies shot a 93.
Kayleigh Brown played in her first 18-hole match and shot a 97.
Freshmen Abby Davis and Tala Johnson also competed and shot a 105 and 106, respectively. Johnson’s score was her personal best by 10 strokes.
“This is the second time this season that I have had four girls break 100 in the same round,” Pallett said. “Abby and Tala were close to 100 as well. We are starting to build depth in our program, which makes the team better. A few years back, breaking 400 as a team was our goal.”
The Rockets will compete on Monday in the East vs West Showdown at the Muskegon Country Club.
