Reeths-Puffer tennis players Elisa Howard and Brylee Gifford wanted to be part of all the winning on Thursday, but they were having a more difficult time than a lot of their teammates.

They won the first set against their opponents in the No. 3 doubles match, but lost the second, and were in danger of losing their match.

But Howard and Gifford gutted out a 10-8 victory in the tiebreaker to beat Whitehall’s Emily VanDam and Beatrice Lewis 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

They joined a bunch of Rockets who won their matches in a 6-2 team win over the Vikings.

Winning in straight sets for R-P were Olivia Smith (No. 1 singles), Kaitlyn Darow (No. 4 singles), Ava Dietz and Makayla Smith (No. 1 doubles), Jayla Brink and Kayleigh Brown (No. 2 doubles) and Lauren Slater and Grace Cosens (No. 4 doubles).

The Rockets’ two losses were competitive. Hope Latch (No. 2 singles) fought hard before losing in a three-set tiebreaker.

The victory was a nice welcome gift for new R-P head coach Morgan Pfistner.

“I am so thankful to be leading this group of girls,” Pfistner said. “They were so deserving of this win. Go Rockets!!

The Rockets will host the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Tournament on Saturday.
