As his coach put it, Reeths-Puffer senior Kristian Brown “did not have his A game” on Wednesday, but he’s clearly a good enough golfer to do impressive things without it.

Brown shot an 84, finished in ninth place individually and won a medal at the annual Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Tournament at Chase Hammond Golf Course.

His round was highlighted by a birdie on Hole 11.

“I was proud of him as he battled all day and went at every next hole as a new challenge,” R-P head coach Matt Pallett said about Brown. “His attitude and grit were still able to get him in the top 10.”

The Rockets, who had a really bad day as a team in a conference event on Monday, rebounded and performed better at the GMAA tournament, shooting a combined score of 361 and finishing sixth out of 12 local teams.

Mona Shores won the championship with a score of 319, followed by Western Michigan Christian (338), Fruitport (350) and Ravenna and Oakridge (356).

Also shooting well for R-P was freshman Ian Vokal, who finished with an 87 and was only two shots outside of the top ten medal list.

Senior Beckett Mathes and sophomore Beckitt Johnson both shot a 95.

Overall the Rockets played reasonably well, considering the cold and rainy conditions they competed in, according to Pallett.

“It was a tough day out there to play golf,” he said. “Even with that, all of the guys had decent stretches of golf. We will continue to work on putting complete rounds together.”

The Rockets will return to action next Wednesday at another O-K Green conference jamboree.
