The soggy weather, along with spring break, hasn’t allowed the Reeths-Puffer boys golf team to practice or compete very much lately, but sophomore Beckitt Johnson is starting to heat up anyway.

Last week he shot the team’s second-best score at a conference jamboree, then followed up on Saturday by shooting a team-best round of 83 at the Kent City Invitational at the Falls of Barber Creek golf course.

Johnson finished 10th in the individual standings and won his first varsity medal.

“Beckitt Johnson had his second good outing in a row,” said R-P head coach Matt Pallett. “He played a solid round and I am happy for him winning his first medal.”

The Rockets were supposed to play in a two-day tournament in Traverse City on Friday and Saturday, but it was cancelled, so they slipped into the Kent City event at the last minute.

R-P tied for ninth place in its division with a team score of 356.

Freshman Ian Vokal shot an 87 for the Rockets and birdied two holes. Senior Kristian Brown shot an 88 and also birdied two holes.

Senior Carter Hekkema shot a 98, the first 18-hole round under 100 in his varsity career.

“After having our tournament cancelled in Traverse City, I was grateful that we were able to get into this event,” Pallett said. “Our players continue to battle despite the few opportunities to practice with the weather.

“I feel this team will continue to work hard to improve. I enjoy the process.”
