CALEDONIA - The Reeths-Puffer girls soccer team showed resilience in a tightly contested O-K Green Conference matchup Thursday night, battling Caledonia to a 1-1 draw in a game defined by defensive intensity and timely goalkeeping.
The Rockets faced a tough road challenge against the Fighting Scots, and despite falling behind on a penalty kick midway through the first half, answered quickly and matched Caledonia the rest of the way in a physical, evenly-played contest.
Reeths-Puffer is now 4-2-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the conference standings. Caledonia is now 2-1-3 and 1-0-1.

Caledonia opened the scoring with 18:16 remaining in the first half after drawing a foul inside the box and converting the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.
The Rockets responded less than three minutes later.
Junior forward Ashlyn David delivered the equalizer with 15:06 remaining in the half, finishing a scoring opportunity created by senior Ashley Bradley to tie the game at 1-1.
The quick response goal proved critical in a game where both defenses made quality chances difficult to find the rest of the night.

R-P head coach Kody Harrell knew that falling behind to a good team on the road could be dangerous, and was impressed with the way his team pulled even so quickly.
“It would have been one thing for us to score the first goal and feel good about ourselves,” Harrell said. “But to respond and get that equalizer, that type of response is something you can carry through the rest of your season.”
From that point forward, both teams settled into a defensive rhythm.
R-P freshman goalkeeper Ava Callender continued her strong early-season play, recording multiple saves in key moments to keep the Rockets in the game.

She stopped two early Caledonia chances in the opening half and added another stop before halftime. She added another save early in the second half to maintain the tie.
Reeths-Puffer generated several offensive opportunities in the second half, including a shot on goal from senior Mallorie Messer with 23:17 remaining and a breakaway attempt by junior standout Jaslynn Kops that was turned aside.
Freshman Josie Hopkins also tested the Caledonia goalkeeper late in the game as the Rockets searched for a go-ahead goal in the final minutes.
Statistically, the teams were nearly even throughout the night. Caledonia finished with five shots on goal compared to four for Reeths-Puffer, while each goalkeeper recorded four saves. The Fighting Scots held a slight edge in corner kicks, 3-2.

Despite the tie, Harrell was pleased with the overall effort, and said the Rockets’ ability to stay connected as a group allowed them to make the bus trip home without a loss.
“I think our biggest thing was we’ve got a really together group this year,” Harrell said. “We talked a lot about how instead of just trying to make a plays individually, how do we create a scoring chance for a teammate? Tonight I thought there was a light bulb that really switched on.”
The performance continued a positive early-season stretch for the Rockets, who opened the year with three straight wins before dropping two close games prior to spring break. They got back on track on Tuesday with a dominant 8-0 victory over Muskegon.

“Now that we’ve had more time together on the training grounds, you can see things starting to come together,” Harrell said. “We used those early games as learning moments, and it’s starting to pay dividends.”
Reeths-Puffer will try to carry its strong play into a big rivalry conference game on Tuesday at home against Mona Shores.
“I think a lot of it is taking this emotional high from a really solid performance against a really good Caledonia team and carrying that into our rivalry game,” Harrell said. “The confidence will definitely help.”
