LAST YEAR: The Rockets had a good season, with a 22-11 overall record and a 10-5 mark in conference play, and won the GMAA county tournament, but were disappointed because they expected to have a strong chance to win conference and district titles for the second year in a row. They ended up third in the O-K Green conference and were upset by Grand Haven in a Division 1 district championship game.

A STRONG RETURNING NUCLEUS: The Rockets lost some senior standouts from last year’s team, but still return a lot of experienced players, starting with their top weapon, senior pitcher Lainey McDaniel, one of the best hurlers in the area and beyond who earned All-Conference, All-District and All-Region honors last season. Also returning to the starting lineup are junior catcher/outfielder Tessa Ross (All-Conference and All-District last season), junior outfielder Madi Reichert, junior second baseman/shortstop Makenzie Jacobs and junior utility player Olivia Ambler. Also back this season are seniors Ava Gibbs and Caydence Rettinghouse.

THREE KEY NEWCOMERS: Freshmen Carlie Guikema and Makayla Jewett will step into important pitching roles for the Rockets right away, providing depth on the mound when McDaniel is not pitching. Sophomore Lorelei Herrygers will be a valuable utility player, spending time in the infield and outfield.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: The Rockets will start the season with 13 players on the varsity roster, including 4 seniors, 6 juniors, 1 sophomore and 2 freshmen.

TEAM STRENGTHS/CHALLENGES: R-P has a lot of returners with varsity experience to provide leadership. The Rockets will also have speed on the basepaths, and four left-handed hitters in the regular lineup. The team will also have a lot of defensive versatility, with many players capable of performing well at numerous positions. R-P’s biggest challenge will be coming together as a team with a lot of new players in the regular lineup.

COACH QUOTE: We have a strong group of girls who consistently work hard and give their best, no matter the challenge. I’m excited to see their growth throughout the season, and I expect success in both big and small ways. Our focus is on recognizing and celebrating the small wins just as much as the big moments.” – Sarah Bayle
