The Reeths-Puffer boys basketball team really needed a win, and of course senior standout Marvin Moore was the guy who made it happen in the end.

Moore hit a floater shot off the glass as the clock expired on Saturday, giving the Rockets a thrilling 65-63 victory over East Grand Rapids in a non-conference matchup at R-P’s Dan Beckeman Arena.

The big win broke a tough 11-game losing streak for the Rockets, who had not posted a victory since the opening game of the season.

Moore was the biggest star of the night, pouring in 15 of his team-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, including his game-winning shot.

The game also showed how promising the future could be, with sophomores Rodney Walker and Artis Williams each scoring 13 points, and their classmate Hank Mitchelson adding nine.

“Every time we needed a bucket, Marvin stepped up and made a shot for us, so it was fitting that he made the last shot of the game.” said R-P head coach JR Wallace. “Williams and Walker both made some tough shots for us, too, throughout the game.

“It was a good team win with three guys in double figures. But I am most happy about our execution down the stretch, the guys being engaged during time-outs, and then taking it to the court.”

Moore, Williams and Mitchelson each hit a three-pointer in the first quarter, helping the Rockets jump out to a promising 17-10 lead.

EGR had a 16-14 edge in the second quarter, cutting the R-P lead to 31-26 at halftime.

Moore literally put the game on his shoulders in the final quarter, scoring 15 of his team’s 19 points.

The Rockets will visit Caledonia on Wednesday in an O-K Green conference game.
