The Reeths-Puffer girls volleyball team finished the regular season just one victory shy of the .500 mark, at 19-20, following a win and a loss in a three-team event at Fremont High School on Thursday.
The Rockets defeated Kent City 25-12, 25-20, then lost an early lead and fell to Fremont 25-23, 12-25, 17-25.
Seniors Mairyn Peterson and Makayla Disselkoen both had strong nights with 13 kills apiece. Peterson also served up five aces and Kate Tindall had 41 assists.

Defensively, Tindall and senior Mallorie Messer each had 10 digs.
“Our offense looked very good against Kent City,” said R-P head coach Justin Birr. “We controlled the pace of play with our passing, so we could run our offense effectively. It was great to see our offense and defense complementing each other so well.
“Against Fremont, it started as more of the same. We were running a good offense and capitalizing on their mistakes. However, Fremont stepped it up serving, and we started not passing as well. This led to a predictable offense on our side, and a quick offense on their side that we could not keep up on.

“Ending the regular season with a loss is tough, but I'm confident our team can learn from it and keep growing.”
The Rockets will have a tough test next Wednesday when they play state-ranked Grand Haven in the first round of Division 1 districts at Mona Shores High School at 5 p.m.
