Shooting a great round of golf and winning a big tournament is quite an accomplishment.

Taking first place again the next day, in a totally different event on a different course against different competitors, is seriously impressive.

Reeths-Puffer junior Sophia McCollum shot a three-under-par 33 on Wednesday and took first place individually at the fourth O-K Green conference jamboree of the season, at Saskatoon Golf Club.

That came one day after she won the individual championships by 10 strokes at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Tournament, the premier event for Muskegon County high schools.

McCollum has now finished in first place at seven events this season.

Sophia McCollum, who claimed her seventh first place finish of the season.

“I was curious how Sophia would respond after having such a great day on Tuesday,” said R-P head coach Matt Pallett. “It’s hard to follow up a great round with another one. She did just that today. Her 33 even included a penalty stroke!”

As a team the Rockets finished third in the five-team event with a season-best jamboree score of 179. Byron Center took first place with a 159.

Junior Olivia Ambler shot a 46 for the Rockets, seven shots better than her score on the same course last year. Junior Ella Voorhies shot a 47, which was 12 shots better than last year.

“Olivia and Ella continue to show progress,” Pallett said. “They sometimes get frustrated because they feel and know they can play better. But when you take a step back and look at where they are, improving by seven and 12 strokes respectively on the same course from last year, they have a lot to be positive about. Their best golf is still to come.”

Senior Ava Gibbs rounded out the R-P scorers with a 53, which was her personal best for a conference jamboree.

Seniors Jaylynn Acre and Keeley Cole also competed and both shot a 57.
