Reeths-Puffer boys soccer coach Kody Harrell kept saying that one of these days, his team’s offense was going to start clicking and the goals would come in bunches.
That happened on Saturday, when the Rockets blew open a narrow halftime lead and beat Grand Rapids Northview 5–0 in a non-conference matchup.
The Rockets have won two in a row and are 9-3-3 on the season.
Goalie Liam Copenhaver, who has four shutouts in the last six games.
It was R-P’s best offensive performance in weeks. The Rockets had only managed three goals in their previous six games. They were 2-2-2 in that stretch, thanks to some great defense and goalkeeping, but their wins were by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 and they had two 0-0 ties.
Then the floodgates opened on Saturday.
They led 1-0 at halftime, following a goal by Evan McHugh.
Carson McCollum, who has two goals and one assist in the last two games.
They added four more in the second half, with Cohen Beck, Kaden Vanderlaan, Owen Ritsema and Kaleb Fowler finding the back of the net.
Braydon Ross, Jesus Hidalgo, Blake Kiel, Carson McCollum and Adryan Jackson had assists for R-P.
Goalie Liam Copenhaver collected the shutout with five saves. He now has four shutouts in the last six games.
The Rockets had an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Owen Ritsema, who has one goal and two assists in the last two games.
“Super excited about the boys finally seeing some goals from all of their hard work,” Harrell said. “Our buildup and passing is looking so much better!
“We had the classic ‘It takes us a half to adjust to turf’ legs' today, but once we get into our rhythm and started communicating and moving the ball around to each other, man are we fun to watch. I think we could play really deep into October if we can maintain consistency with that, because our back line and goaltending are quick impressive right now.”
The Rockets will host Muskegon on Tuesday and Caledonia on Thursday in a pair of O-K Green conference games.
