Reeths-Puffer’s two top tennis players are on a bit of a roll, even as their teammates, mostly underclassmen, continue to struggle and learn.

Senior Cory Judd continued his recent strong play at No. 2 singles with a pair of wins over the past few days.

In a Saturday match on the road, Judd defeated Grand Rapids Northview’s Micah Wells 6-2, 6-0. On Monday at home, Judd beat Caledonia’s Quinn Stanley 6-4, 6-4.

Judd is now 8-6 on the season.

Senior Ethan Frang, R-P’s No. 1 singles player, also won another match on Monday, plowing past Caledonia’s Hudsen Derengowski 6-0, 6-1.

Frang won his Saturday match by default. He is now 13-6 on the season.

The two seniors were the only bright spots for the Rockets in the two matches. The Rockets fell to Northview 6-2 and Caledonia 7-2.

R-P’s No. 2 doubles team of Landon VanderKooi and Henrik Ketner did put up a tough fight against Northview, falling in two sets 7-6, 7-6.

"The two seniors took care of their business at the top of the lineup,” R-P head coach Ryan Hankinson said about Judd and Frang. “They have both positioned themselves to be in contention for the important number two seed at the conference tournament.

“The rest of the team is just working on fundamentals and continuous improvement as they grow individually to come back as stronger players over the second half of their careers as juniors and seniors.

“That is the luxury of being young and new at a difficult sport like tennis.”
