It’s always good to beat rival Mona Shores, and that’s exactly what the Reeths-Puffer boys cross country squad did on Friday at the Ottawa Hills Invitational at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids.

The young, developing Rockets beat the Sailors in the final meet standings, 506-546.

Neither team did great against the competition in the 17-team field, finishing in the final two spots, Lowell won the event with a much lower score.

But the Rockets posted some better times and showed continued development, which is what they are looking for with a roster full of underclassmen who are building toward the future.

“These guys all ran very well,” said R-P coach Darin Grant. “Four of the five guys ran their fastest times of the season. The average improvement was 35.5 seconds, with Jon Visscher making the most improvement in the group, running one minute, 35 seconds faster.”

R-P senior Dylan Starr led the team with a 91st place finish in the huge field of runners with a time of 18:23.

The up-and-coming group filled out the rest of the Rocket scoresheet, led by freshman Landon Learn (19:26), freshman Gabe Luna (20:00), sophomore Kyron Novak (20:09), and sophomore Visscher (22:42).

The Rockets will return to action this weekend at the Cougar Falcon Invitational, hosted by Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
