The youngsters are getting the job done for the Reeths-Puffer volleyball team.

Freshmen Lexie Danz and Kate Tindall led the offense and defense on Saturday, when the Rockets plowed ahead to a 3-1 record as the West Ottawa Invitational.

Danz led the offense with 19 kills, with a lot of help from Tindall, who dished out 58 assists.

Tindall led the defense with 26 digs while Danz was second with 24.

They helped the Rockets defeat Traverse City West 22-25, 25-22, 15-13; Benton Harbor 25-4, 25-4 and Hopkins 25-18, 18-25, 18-16.

R-P’s only loss was to Hamilton, by a score of 12-25, 18-25.

The three victories gave Reeths-Puffer an 11-10 record, only one win shy of last year’s victory total of 12 – and there is still half a season to go.

Other leaders for R-P were Mairyn Peterson with 12 kills and eight aces while Wren Tryska served 11 aces. Defensively, Carlee Bowen had 23 digs and Peterson had nine blocks.

This is a much different Reeths-Puffer team than last year, and that’s obvious when comparing the play on Saturday to how R-P performed last year at the same event.

“Last year we lost to Traverse City West 13-25, 7-25,” said R-P head coach Justin Birr. “This year we beat them in three sets. What an impressive and gritty win from our girls.

“The good news is that we went 3-1 on the day, and that is a success and an improvement from going 1-2 at the same invitational last year. The even better news is that our team is still hungry for more, and they want to continue winning.”
