The Reeths-Puffer boys cross country team will long remember the opportunity to compete in the very fun Under the Lights Invitational at Grand Rapids South Christian High School.

With a team mostly comprised of brand new freshman, running after dark, in a field of 15 teams and 349 runners with a big crowd watching, was a unique experience.

But the competition was tough and the Rockets struggled, finishing last in the team standings.

R-P’s top runner was senior Dylan Sturr, who turned in a respectable time of 18:37 and still finished in 102nd place, due to the very competitive nature of the event.

Rounding out the R-P top five were Gabriel Luna (20:19), Landon Learn (22:02), Kyron Novak (22:40) and Jonathan Steenhagen (23:42).

"Dylan Sturr had a solid race at 18:37," said R-P Coach Darin Grant. "He started out buried in the enormous pack of runners but kept moving up the entire race.

"Freshmen Joey Jerome and Jon Steenhagen ran great. Both ran more than two minutes faster than they did just three days ago, and based on how they finished and looked during the race, I know they have more to give, which is typical for a freshman.

"It was a day of mixed results for the young team and we have work to do. I keep reminding myself and will emphasize this with the team at practice this week. - results happen over time, not overnight. Work hard, stay consistent, and be patient."
