Jayla Brink and Makayla Smith had more than a little pressure on them on Saturday.

Their Reeths-Puffer girls tennis team was tied with Ludington for first place at the Ludington Invitational, with just their final match remaining.

If Brink and Smith won, their team would win the tournament. If they lost, the Rockets would finish second.

The two got the job done, beating Ludington's Maggie Tang and Chloe Vangills 6-3, 6-0 and clinching the tournament championship for Reeths-Puffer.

The Rockets totaled 18 points, followed by Ludington (17), Coopersville (9) and Sparta (4).

"These two close friends showed the continued improvement they have each shown over the course of the season," said R-P head coach Ryan Hankinson about Brink and Smith. "They dominated the match, with great serving by Jayla and brilliant net play by Kayla, earning the team the final point of the day and the outright championship."

R-P's Molly Matz and Mylie Neel both had a great day in singles, posting 3-0 records and winning the championship in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

The Rockets' No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Matz and Elana Weiden also cruised to a 3-0 mark and won the title in their flight.

Molly Matz had little trouble at No. 3 singles, beating Ludington's Amaya Sytek 6-4, 6-1, Sparta's Naomi Mellander 6-0, 6-2 and Coopersville's Bella Eisenhauer 6-1, 6-0.

Neel also won her matches in straight sets at No. 4 singles, beating Coopersville's Addison Banka 6-2, 6-3, Ludington's Sawyer Henderson 6-4, 6-2 and Sparta's Larra Edwards 6-0, 6-0.

Lauren Matz and Weiden had to work a little harder at No. 2 doubles, particularly in their first match against Ludington, which they won 6-2, 1-6 and 10-8 in a tiebreaker. They went on to beat Sparta 6-1, 6-0 and Coopersville 6-2, 6-3.

Several other Rockets also had very good days. Olivia Smith (No. 1 singles), Hope Latsch (No. 2 singles), Kaitlyn Darow and Ava Dietz (No. 3 doubles) and Brink and Smith (No. 4 doubles) all posted 2-1 records.

Earning one win for R-P were Gabrielle Borgeson and Malania Eilers (No. 1 doubles). That victory was also crucial, because each win produced one team point.
