Reeths-Puffer senior standout Travis Ambrose scored 13 points on Tuesday – and reached the 1,000-point career mark in the process – helping the Rockets secure a 49-42 victory over Jenison on the road in non-conference action.

Ambrose became only the seventh player in R-P boys basketball history to reach the 1,000-point mark. His teammate and friend, Jaxson Whitaker, accomplished the same feat earlier this season.

“He does everything in life well and always strives for excellence,” R-P Coach Nate Aardema said about Ambrose. “It’s cool to see such great kids and two great friends both earn their 1,000th point within a few games of each other.”

The Rockets improved to 6-1 on the season, but struggled at times to get the win.

They led 13-9 after one quarter and 24-14 at halftime, but were outscored 16-9 in the third quarter and only led 33-30 heading into the fourth.

R-P nailed down the win with a 16-12 edge down the stretch.

Brayden Mitchelson had a good game for the Rockets, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Whitaker added eight points with five assists and two steals while Antrel Jones, starting his first game after coming back from an injury, had nine points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

Ambrose also had nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

“We shot the ball poorly and made just 8 of 18 free throws,” Aardema said. “We need to refocus and get ready for league play to start on Friday at home against Mona Shores.”
