R-P girls golf team

The Reeths-Puffer girls golf team - which at this point last year was still developing and struggling as a whole - is suddenly on fire.

On Wednesday the Rockets broke through and won their first conference jamboree tournament in five years.

On Friday they topped that, shooting a five-year low team score of 336 for 18 holes and winning their first team invitational tournament in five years.

The best part was that it all happened at their own tournament, the Rocket Invitational, played at Lincoln Golf Club.

Coopersville finished in second place with 341 points, Hudsonville was third at 352 and Mona Shores was fourth at 357.

The Rockets shot a five-year low score for their team and won their own tournament.

The Rockets beat their best 18-hole score from this year by 27 shots, and their 2022 Rocket Invitational score by an amazing 82 shots.

“Two days ago, when we won our first Jamboree in five years, I was quoted as saying that in my 27 years of coaching various sports at R-P that I had never been more proud of a team as I was that night,” said R-P Coach Matt Pallett. “Well, I am even more proud of these girls today for winning their first invite in five years!”

R-P’s senior All-Stater Paige Anderson was at the top of her game, shooting a one-under par 71 and winning the individual tournament championship.

Anderson, who birdied five holes, finished five shots ahead of Coopersville’s Lauren Davis.

“I really don’t know what else to say about Paige Anderson,” Pallett said. “She is a great player, a great leader and even a better person. I am so happy for her. She has worked so hard in her career to get to this level.”

Junior Rowan Bluhm and freshman Sophia McCollum both shot 86 on the day, good for an eighth-place tie in the individual standings and an All-Tournament medal for both. Bluhm shot par on eight holes and McCollum had an impressive birdie on the 14th hole.

Another Rocket who had a great day was junior Avery Luna, who shot a personal record score of 93, which was nine strokes better than her previous mark.

Senior Abby Haak shot a 113 and freshman Oliva Ambler shot a 115.

“Assistant Coach Howard and I have been talking all year that we just need to find a fourth to step up behind Paige, Rowan and Sophia,” Pallett said. "Today Avery Luna took a giant step. Her performance was amazing!”
