Liam McHugh had another great day, this time at the Division 1 track and field regionals at Grand Haven High School on Friday, winning championships in two events and qualifying for the state finals in three.

McHugh won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14:88, which was a personal record. He also won the high jump with a personal and school record of 6 feet, 8.5 inches.

The Rockets’ 4x100-meter relay team of Kameron Coleman, Caiden Bolduc, Ja Ceion Riley and McHugh also qualified for the state finals by finishing in fifth place with a time of 43.54.

McHugh (300-meter hurdles) and Jaxon Allen (1,600-meter run) both finished in the top eight of those events and won medals for their efforts.

The Reeths-Puffer boys finished ninth out of 15 teams at the meet. Rockford took first place.

The Division 1 state finals are scheduled for June 3 at Rockford High School.

“Great day for the all the state qualifiers and the Rockets!” said R-P boys coach Don Ketner. “Our region has pretty tough competition and the guys stepped up and did a great job of handling the pressure of the meet.

“We are so happy for Liam taking down the school record in the high jump and qualifying in three events, and we’re proud of the other members of the relay team making it as well! We’re excited to be spending two more weeks preparing for the state meet!”

The R-P girls team did not have any athletes qualify for the state finals, but several had very good days.

The Rockets’ 4x200-meter relay team of Jersi Bilek, Lainey McDaniel, Bri Smith and Melana Johnson finished sixth in their event and won medals.

Bri Smith finished seventh and won a medal in the 200-meter dash. The Rockets’ 4x100-meter relay team of Lainey McDaniel, Melana Johnson, Bri Smith and Madi Smith finished seventh and also won medals.

The R-P girls finished 14th in the team standings. Rockford won the girls team competition, as well.
