The Reeths-Puffer softball team has been a run-scoring machine for most of the season, but that trait was not evident on Tuesday.

The Rockets only managed a total of two runs in two games against Zeeland West and were shut out for the first time this season in the second game.

R-P lost the opener 3-2 and the nightcap 7-0.

“It felt like we were missing a spark at the plate,” said R-P Coach Sarah Bayle. “We played great defensively all the way around with great effort, diving plays, and more, but we just didn't play great offensively.

Mady Snyder, who pitched great in Game 1 but lost.

“The second game was the first time we have been shut out all season long. It took 24 games before that happened, which when you think about it like that is pretty impressive. I don't think we have to complicate it any more than we simply just didn't hit and we need to do better next time. I have faith in these girls.”

In Game 1, R-P took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, Zeeland West tied the score in the fifth, then got the go-ahead run in the sixth.

Lainey McDaniel, who pitched great and had three hits in the Game 2 loss.

The Rockets only managed four hits, including two from Kyleigh Bilek. Pitcher Mady Snyder performed well in the loss with five strikeouts.

In Game 2, Zeeland West scored once in the first inning and three more times in both the fifth and seventh innings. R-P managed six hits put could not get a run across the plate.

Lainey McDaniel had two singles and a double for the Rockets and also pitched a great game with 11 strikeouts.

The Rockets will host Hudsonville in a doubleheader on Thursday.
