Bio Richard Erne earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and his Masters in Conducting degree at Michigan State University. Mr. Erne began his teaching career 1991 at Battle Creek Pennfield. The following year he started at Reeths-Puffer as Assistant HS Band Director. From 1997-1999, Mr. Erne was the Director of Bands and Orchestras as well as Chairman of the Music Department for the Grand Haven Area Public Schools. In 1999, upon the retirement of long-time Reeths-Puffer MS Director, Louise Rosswaag, Mr. Erne was hired to be the MS Band Director. Mr. Erne has been active in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association since 1991, serving as District President, Music Education Committee member, Treasurer, and Vice President for Band & Orchestra. He has served as the West Shore Youth Symphony Orchestra Director, District 3 Honor Band Director, and guest clinician at the Greenville’s Winter Festival. He founded and is currently Co-Chair of the District 7 Middle School Honors Orchestra & Band. Mr. Erne’s honors include consistently Superior ratings at District and State Festivals for his ensembles through the years. He was a two-time nominee by District 7 for Teacher of the Year and was twice awarded the Educator Achievement Award from the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation in 1998 and in 1999. Mr. Erne has remained involved at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in many capacities since 1986, ranging from staff member, international group leader, conductor, assistant Program Director and most recently as Program Director in 2005. As a trumpet player, he has performed in the Blue Lake Festival Band under the direction of Dr. Harry Begian, as well as tenor horn with the Brass Band of Battle Creek.
