How to Be Successful As Students - What to Look For as Parents
There are a few basic things students and parents can do to be successful in math:
Take down the notes from class. Students can use these notes as a reference during tests. They also help to fill parents in on what happened in class.
Use you class time to get better at math. You have to sit in class anyway. Get work done while you're surrounded by others that are working on math and can help. Ask questions as they come up. Don't settle for just not knowing why. Participate in class discussions.
Come to class prepared. Bring a pencil, math book, paper, folder, calculator, and your assignment EVERY DAY. It's tough to learn when you don't have the necessary materials.
Expect to have at least a little math practice to complete at home every day during the school week.
Do and know the information on the practice assessment. The assessment will be no surprise if you're using your practice assessment. If you cannot do the practice, you need to do more before the assessment: work with a friend, ask the teacher questions, look it up in your notes or book, try a different strategy...do something. If you don't act now, it will be evident when test day comes around.
