2011-2012 Annual Education Report

Dear Reeths-Puffer Parents and Members of the Community:

I am pleased to present you with the Reeths-Puffer Annual Education Report which provides key information on the 2011-2012 educational progress for the Reeths-Puffer Schools.  The Annual Education Report addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and some requirements of state laws; however, our staff is available to help you understand this information.  If you have questions or need assistance to understand some of the links included in this page, please contact Margie Bates at 719-3104.

The Annual Education Report is also available for you to review in my office or in the principal's office at your child's school.

The report contains the following information:

Student Assessment Data - Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP), Michigan Merit Exam (MME), and Michigan's Alternative Assessment Program (MI-Access)

  • Presents achievement data for all five tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing) compared to targets for all students as well as subgroups of students.

  • Provides achievement data for all five tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing) for students with significant disabilities (MI-Access or MEAP-Access) compared to targets for all students with disabilities as well as subgroups of students.

  • Helps readers understand achievement progress within schools and compare these to district and state achievement.

Top to Bottom Ranking - Detail Data and Status - Information used to rank school is based on the development of the Top to Bottom list of schools and their performance.  Each school's Top to Bottom ranking will be based on student achievement, student growth over time, school improvement over time and achievement gaps across all five tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing).

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) - AYP status is based on student participation and proficiency in mathematics and reading.  Attendance targets must be met for elementary and middle schools and graduation rate targets must be met for high schools and districts.

For 2011-12, all schools in the district made Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP) in the tested subjects, as well as met attendance and graduation rates.  However, at this time, the district has not earned AYP as a result of a very small sub-group slightly under-performing the total population in both English Language Arts and math.  We are actively working to address the district issues by implementing the following:

  • Staff will provide additional supplemental reading experiences to students who are at risk in reading (i.e, supplemental reading experiences, direct phonics instruction, Scholastics Read180, and Scholastic System 44 supports).

  • Staff will provide direct instruction in content and general academic vocabulary to help build background knowledge and success in the academic areas.

  • Math teachers will model concepts in multiple ways to maximize student opportunity to learn mathematical concepts and skills at a deep conceptual level.

  • Implement attendance strategies to ensure students are in school and actively engaged in the learning activities on a daily basis.

Teacher Qualification Data

  • Identifies teacher qualifications at district and school levels.

  • Reports percentage of core academic classes taught by teachers not considered highly qualified to teach such classes.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Data

  • Provides state results of the national assessment in mathematics and reading every other year in grades 4 and 8.

  • Cannot be compared with MEAP results for grades 4 and 8 because there are no national standards.

The district continually strives to improve and has applied many new strategies over the past years to improve the performance of Reeths-Puffer Schools.   Each building has identified additional strategies relevant to its student population under its school improvement umbrella.  We are committed to providing the very best we can to our students, so that each can meet the high standards for graduation from Reeths-Puffer Schools.

Sincerely,

Steve Edwards
