Karim Ahmad
Karim, a student from Lebanon, is closing out the school year as one changed individual. When Karim first arrived here as a student last September, he was a shy wheelchair-bound ten year old. Today, with his medical needs in check, he has flourished and while still embracing his cultural background, has learned to enjoy many things we as Americans take for granted. Things like team sports, television, birthday celebrations, and most importantly an education have changed Karim's outlook on life. Pushing through the obstacles placed in his way due to a rare genetic disorder called Olmsted's disease, Karim has learned to speak fluent English, read easy reading texts, and solve simple math algorithms. In addition, he has learned that his adopted school community is a caring community with a deep empathy for his plight. Karim returns to his family and homeland in mid-June. The Liz and Joe Zagar family, as his host family here in Muskegon, have been responsible for the many opportunities afforded Karim in his past, current and future medical treatment both here and abroad. They have also brought to Karim's young life a wealth of experiences Karim could only dream about before. We are thankful to the Zagar's for bringing this remarkable boy into our lives. We are all richer for knowing him.
Coins for Karim
Coins for Karim was a program Central Elementary used to raise funds for Karim. The initial goal for this fundraising program was $2,000; however, with the generosity of Central's students, staff and families, $3,300 was raised! The Central Elementary Staff also hosted a soup supper to benefit Karim. Many families attended this event which raised an additional $1,000. Brandon Ruiter contributed $500 to the total funds raised with donations he collected and an anonymous $550 donation brought the total for Karim to over $5,000. Thanks for all the generosity! |
